Frequently Asked Questions
- How do you get to Leo's? See the Directions page for Rancho Mastatal.

Can you recommend places to stay
near San José airport? Click here

San José.
-
Are there lots of bugs around Mastatal? In our
opinion, we have few problems with biting insects. Nevertheless, they
do exist. The biting insects that do reside in and around Mastatal
thrive on new blood. Some people react worse then others to bug bites.
Most people get accustomed to our flying friends after a few short
days.
-
How can I communicate with friends & family
back home? The closest public phone is four kilometers from the Ranch in the town of San Miguel. From time to time, it is out of service. San Miguel is about 10 minutes by car — 20 minutes by bicycle. Rancho Mastatal keeps a cell phone for emergencies and urgent calls. You'll find Internet access in most medium-sized towns and large cities, but there
is no access around the Mastatal area.
The closest Internet cafés are in the towns of Parrita, Quepos,
Jacó and Puriscal, all more than an hour away by car.
- What's the weather like? There is no "best" season to visit Leo's — each season has its advantages & disadvantages. The dry
season runs from December through mid-April; the rainy (green) season occupies the rest of
the year. Although the dry season has more predictable
weather, less rain and easier travel, the rainy season
has fewer tourists, more lush scenery, cooler weather and generally cheaper travel.
The sun does show its face a fair amount during the rainy months as
well. The temperature ranges from the low to mid-60s to the high 80s (15-28C.) It gets hot in the middle of the day, especially during the dry season. This is the best time to head into the forest, or find a nice swimming hole or waterfall. Nights are generally comfortable for sleeping. Most sleepers use sheets and many opt for sheets and blankets.
- How far is Leo's from the beach? We are only five miles from the Central Pacific Coast, though the trip from Mastatal to the coast
will take you more than an hour. Although we have great views to the
Pacific Ocean from Mastatal, plan enough time to travel to the Central Pacific
Coast's famous beaches. If you rent a car, you can get to the beach
in a bit more than an hour. By bus, it's 3-4 hours.
